29/10/2012

S'intitola «Piccole pompe funebri.

Who is the Baroness of Brescia, slightly bitch, descendant from the Blessed Crocifissa Rose who loves taking it in the ass by a New York writer?

This is a Google translation, forgive the errors

Who is the Baroness of Brescia, slightly bitch,  descendant from the Blessed Crocifissa Rose who loves taking it in the ass by a New York writer?

You have to know how that your Mymosa Moon was last week in Cyprus, to enjoy a little sea and sun, while in her home town in northern Italy, Brescia in fact, is already autumn . Beach full of old British couples who seemed to come en masse from semidetached houses in Tunbridge Wells, (Mymosa Moon though not dramatically young, lowered the average age), and what looked like Ukrainian caregivers of these couples, but who  were instead the wives of the new Russian tycoons , Cyprus is one of their favorite destinations, Cyprus despite driving on the left and having two British military bases, is now an enclave of the friends of Putin. So Mymosa was there with her umbrella  and chair, in full disguise, and a book in hand, the last of Edmund White, Jack Holmes and his friends (Bloosmbury, published in Italy by Playground)), in English so as not to be conspicuous, among the British crowd, She jumped at  the unexpected surprise to find in this novel set in New York in the sixties seventies, a character, Pia, from the Italian province, a city like Mymosa Moon’s  Brescia,  totally out of the Italian Grand Tour, but what struck her the most, besides the intricate details that describes the sodomy of the Baroness, the very precise detail that among the baroness’s ancestors there is a Crocifissa di  Rosa. A real local saint. Who gave White this information?  Does anyone have any idea who the baronessa may be?   Pia sleeps with almost everyone, so when he discovers that he got  the crabs from her, she candidly confesses (to Jack) to have them got  from one of the black delivery boys that bring her the pizza home. Happy times  the seventies, the worst you could get,  were crabs.
Edmund White is one of the leading writers and bestselling  gay American writers,  his latest book is divided into three parts, the first in the third person, focuses on journalist Jack Holmes, who after college  moves to New York, where he falls in love, non-corresponded,  with a colleague, the aspiring writer Will Wright, Jack ends up accepting his homosexuality, but confining it to the purely sexual dimension, nurturing parallel friendship with Will and with a woman of Upper Class New York. Alex. It’s inevitable that Will and Alex meet, that the two fit together and they leave Jack, the third excluded one in the repetition of the Oedipal triangle
The second part is narrated in first person by the character Will. Will has married Alex, continues to work in New York but lives with his family in their country estate about an hour train from the metropolis. After years in which he lost contact with Jack, he reencounters him,  invites him to dinner at his house. Jack takes an Italian friend, the Pia, with whom Will begins an adulterous affair  Having established  the role of Italian women as slightly whores, compare to the puritan Americans,  (there is another character the Beatrice, New York correspondent of a Italian communist newspaper that organizes orgy parties in New York) after taking the crabs and the clap, Will at the end returns to  the family nest.
Third part,  in the third person, New York in recent years, Jack and Will meet again after so many years, Will has a gay son who wants to be an actor and probably will be helped in his career by the new partner of Jack, an influential and famous American theater director. People do not exchange more than just crabs and Jack and his partner are important activists in the U.S. charities for AIDS, Pia has returned to live in Italy, the Baroness of Brescia is also an important figure in Italy, in the fight against the disease.
Perhaps is not the best books of White, the characters are a bit stereotyped, including the role of  Italian women, the parallelism gays straights a bit déjà vu, , but the jokes are withering, narration light, and even the worst book by a great writer is always a joy and great fun to read.

Gay professionals, professional gays and other categories

At the time Mymosa Moon was living in London, (how beautiful was her flat facing Covent Garden, S. Paul Cathedral and  the far away new skyline of the docklands, but no use crying over the past).. she met a successful english businessman,  swimming in the pool across the road, let us call him Oscar. Oscar was very rich and quite conservative, he did not make a mystery among his friends and clients of being gay,but  being a successful   professional, had a strange way of referring to gay activists, he called them professional gays, with a hint of contempt, because they made a living on just being gay, or at least representing the underprivileged category.
For the category rich people most liked to belong  is that of rich people, with all the privileges that goes along, suffering as minor nuisances the negligible fact of belonging to other less chic categories.
What can I say? One is free to decide to which category he -she belongs to at their own risk. Rich jewish people in Italy of the twenties, that wanted to defend their property from bolshevism and financed and encouraged the rise to power of Mussolini ended up in the gas chamber nevertheless.
besides i could  understand the aversion of Oscar to the left wing rhetoric, victimism that is part of gay politics l but i do not see anything wrong in being a professional gay, somebody has to work full time for the common good.
I think Oscar’s   attitude is the same of all businessmen  to all kind of professional politicians, Silvio Berlusconi for instance always prided himself of not being a professional politician, (having accumulated his fortune mainly having  them to pass laws in his favour),  he always referred to opponent politicians ,  as people who never worked in their life.
I do not know whether it is the same in England because as the real gentlemen do not work, politics is considered a gentlemanly occupation. (with all the evils that follows . see Cameron disastrous policy)
Anyway i was remembering Oscar, following the events  organized by the local gay Circle for a  week against Homophobia in May , in my little town in  northern Italy.
The major attraction of the week against homophobia had been  Franco Grillini, the honorary president of Arci Gay italy, member of parliament for many years, and currently member of regional assembly of Emilia.  A very successful professional  gay, indeed, representing the underprivileged category can be very rewarding.
Slightly fatter and much happier than last time I saw him, Franco Grillini appeared in the the conference room blessing the audience with his mere presence,  serene as a  gay Popesse, benevolent and graceful like a queen.
-We won - he said  exuding magnanimous satisfaction. -She reminded me of margaret thatcher after the fall of the Berlin wall, the call for the end of History of Francis Fukuyama
                                                            Franco Grillini
-we won- I have been invited  in the last month  to a public function  in my home town of Bologna, blue carpet, the reception carabinieri happens to be in blue not in red carpet, and the general of the carabinieri gave a speech that could have been written by me, how to avoid discriminations against gay people  inside the army and outside, in relations to the duties of carabineri towards the general public. We won-, we won,  respect and status. certainly we do not have yet the possibility of gay marriage as in other european nations, but at least we have got something left to fight for,  i met the other day a colleague from belgium, and he told me how lucky you are in italy to have the Pope and the vatican, real enemies , in Belgium there is nothing left we can ask , we obtained everything, how sad..We are lucky to have the Pope, although even in italy with the Pope and no recognition of gay marriages I wonder what  use of gay organisation and therefore of gay politicians r really are -
One was expecting that he was going to press the self destroy button.
I was a  little bit surprised, but on reflection I saw the logic of it, or the dialectic.   Would it make sense to have a organization of slaves once they won and they became masters? or  Can you have  a successful representative of a  discriminated category? There is ample matter for thought. probably we have  reached the stage in which we can make Oscar happy, to have only professional, who are by accident also gay, making superfluous the  professionale gays.

Having reached this satisfactory conclusion it was a bit of an anticlimax to hear the following day another  lecturer  speaking  about the hidden holocaust, that is the extermination of gay  people in the nazi concentration camps. Not as much for that but because he saw a continuous line of oppression from Adolf Hitler to the german shepherd, Pope Ratzinger and the continuous bashing and killing in contemporary Italy    of gay persons. hearing the sequence of numbers dates and facts about the uninterrupted  massacre of gay people reduced the audience in tears, somebody
cried - Is there no end to it? How long will we have to suffer’-
Mymosa Moon was a little bit confused, didn't we  win?, was it not the end of history?,  the little sad and obscure queen stood silent and composed after having caused such a stir, after all we still need some professional gays, everybody was thinking.

Romanino e Moretto.

Romanino .

Parallel Sebastians

Sic transit gloria mundi.
In 1492 a polyptych  by the painter Vincenzo Foppa of Brescia stood on the main altar of the church of San Nazario and Celso, in what is now Corso Matteotti, Brescia italy.   Thirty years later the work of Foppa was taken out, dismembered and divided into various places.
The central part, a nativity is now in a church on the outskirts of the city, Santa Maria Assunta Chiesanuova.

It was replaced   by  a Titian’s polyptych,

Of Titian's painting it is remarkable the saint Sebastian, with   bodybuilder muscles, his hair damp with sweat, an air of sexy tension and yet  abandonment.

Maybe not more sexy certainly  no less elegant Foppa’s Sebastian, now in the Museo of  Brera in Milan, .

who survives avec nonchalance the arrows, posing in front of the spectators, the archers in the background, and certainly not in plausible perspective, in an estranged suspended unreality,  (how can they transfix the saint from behind the shining colum?) , the saint indifferent and superior, to the arrows as to the centurion who wanted to love him

Ama me Sebastiane.

Parallel Conversions

Alessandro Manzoni

Churches and religions are institutions one should leave, not join,  this is Mymosa Moon’s opinion, but dramatic conversions are an easy way  to build a biography, everything else left unchanged,  you do something: you change yourself, your attitude towards the outside world, you gain an identity, a network and a market, and a powerful tool to write novels.
Muriel Spark, who  converted to catholicism  in 1954 (she  was born Muriel Sarah Camberg, her father was jewish her mother presbyterian),  said it wasn't until she became a Roman Catholic that she was able to see human existence as a whole, as a novelist needs to do.
I would add that a novelist needs to construct  a set of   changes in this whole.   A plot must have, Aristotle says, a beginning, a middle, and an end.  The most simple way to relate the events in a plot is to transform the beginning, via the middle,  in its contrary, the end, or to reinforce the beginning through a complication in the middle, whose solution leads to the  happy ending.  In fact   religions, are  of  narrative nature , build on contraries: the son of the highest, a God, suffers the lowest   humiliating death, a form of punishment for slaves, the  cross, but at the end he returns to his father as a God, conquering Death.
Charmian Colston one of main characters of Muriel Spark’s masterpiece Memento Mori, discovers her vocation as a novelist  while she realizes  the simple truth  that rules human relations: people do not love each other. Quite a contradiction, one might think, because in the same time the novelist Muriel Spark, as a catholic convert should obey to the  most unnatural, contrary to human nature, paradoxical  commandment: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

... the law of contraries, the paradoxes of life, the blessing in disguise, the  answered prayers that cause more tears than those that remain unanswered,  the heterogony of ends, i.e.    men serving different purposes than those they  are consciously pursuing....  religion can help to  relate facts, good and evil, conflicts and changes, that would, otherwise,  remain unrelated..
Providence: refers to God’s point of  view of the world , his cooperation with everything that happens, and his guiding of the universe. Evil deeds assume at the end of the story a logic an  explanation, a meaning  not visible with the short sight of human eyes.  The word comes from Latin providentia foresight, prudence, from pro- "ahead" + videre "to see". It means  "knowledge of the future" or omniscience, which Christians believe is an attribute of God.
They say that the Renzo and Lucia are not the real protagonists  of  I Promessi Sposi   (The Betrothed) by Alessandro Manzoni ,  the real subject of the novel is the catholic concept of  providence.  In the little universe of the novel the  omniscient writer plays the role of God.
In Italian literature, Manzoni’s conversion is the most prominent. It happened in Paris, where he was living, having  joined the freethinking household of his mother, and the  literary set of the capital,  among whom he made many friends, notably Claude Fauriel, the old lover of Mme De Staël, who was said to be le plus bel homme de Paris.
Manzoni's firts  wife Enrichetta Blondel repudiated  her own  religion, Calvinist Protestant, to embrace Catholicism, for her husband's sake.
It is said that Manzoni  was not  a good father,  he left his daughter Matilda die alone without the comfort of his presence.

Muriel Spark lived almost half of her life in Tuscany, with a female companion, fiercely denying allegation of a lesbian liaison. The great Dame of english literature had a very strong and bad temperament, refusing to have anything to do with her only son Robin, when he converted to judaism.  She accused him  of seeking publicity to further his career as an artist. ( considering only  her own conversion as genuine).
In  her first novel The Comforters,  the main character, Caroline,  herself a writer and newly convert to catholicism, hears voices, that describes her as character in the novel Muriel Spark is writing. Quite a vicious circle. Of another character, the belgian Baron Stock, it is said that he exhausted his capacity for conversion when he became an englishman. But he is anyway a diabolist, he makes money out of black masses an trafficking in consacrated wafers.  A belgian anglicate is a devil incarnate.

MyMosa Moon in Israel. Or How to keep your faith and you willy too. (iii part)

or The Popesse
From an insider's viewpoint Israel  reveals itself  to be not as compact and unified,  as it might appears from an external perspective.
There is certainly a core of homogeneous  non religious or moderately religious,  well educated cosmopolitan middle class that the foreigner tend to identify, wrongly,  with the majority,  mainly because is  the only one he got to know, but in general , people in Israel are deeply divided and diversified in many ethnic religious groups. There are many synagogues, the orthodox, the ultra orthodox, the reformed, there are observant jews,  of the shabbat as of other everyday rules, the non observant, car driving on shabbat,  and even pork eaters, there are those  who throw stone on the formers, people who  on shabbat just read and do nothing , ("Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”)
there are of  course shabbat lifts at the Hilton, and in the all major  Hotels, going up and down, stopping at each floor so that people do not have to press the button, there are  women veiled, without veil, the ones  with hat, the hatless, those with the wig,  so that they  show other women hairs and keep hidden  hers own, sweating in a subtropical country like Israel, those who cook on shabbat, those who keep their food warm on special heated tray, those with one kitchen sink and the others with two sinks and two sets of cutlery, for meat and cheese, those who accept your dinner invitation and share your own non kosher, Goim food,  and others who do not.
Such  is  the variety of organized identities and behaviours that it does not come entirely as a surprise the joke  that, if  the external surrounding hostility of the muslim  population did not exist, these groups  would immediately start a war between themselves.
One would have thought that it should have been difficult to differentiate themselves within people that are already different but jewish people are very successful in doing just that. probably because the process of differentiation does not stop with the different, you have to keep up your differences from the different..
It is really a shock for a poor italian, coming from a country with a church that is  more centralized  than a leninist party, one church one pope, and the  whole hierarchical structure the comes with it.
But I happened  to think that if  you look closely even Christianity is  a jewish sect, founded by a jew, Saint Paul,  in which the process of differentiation having touched  its climax, that is , being totally different from the already different , reaches the paradoxically conclusion:  the sameness.
For you are all one in Christ Jesus,  There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female,  ( Paul letter to the Galatians 3:28).
Being all one in Jesus, the difference is no more contemplated or tolerated, but persecuted.
Nevertheless having realized that  Christianity is a jewish sect made me feel happier  and really less different from the jewish older brothers, and I began to think of them as less different than they
themselves think they are.
Felice chi è diverso. Essendo egli diverso. Ma guai a chi è diverso. Essendo egli comune. (Sandro Penna)

MyMosa Moon In Israel How to keep your faith and your willy too. (II Part)

It should not come as a surprise  the fact that the opposition Jewish /non Jewish is the first way to establish one's  personal identity in Israel, and related to that, that a religious identity is the most important in defining identity even of non Jewish people.  In fact, imposing religious standards on those who do not desire it,  a civil marriage is not accepted or contemplated in Israel law.
One method is to marry outside Israel; nearby Cyprus became the most convenient venue for many Israelis. Paraguay  which allows marriage without the presence of the couple  to be arranged by the Paraguayan consulate in Tel Aviv, is another jurisdiction used .
A law has been passed at  the Knesset on March 16, 2010; this bill, however, would only grant "couplehood union" status to couples who both declared non-religious status

What are the implications of  the fact that one has to declare his/her non religious-status?  The mere fact that it has to be declared means that a  non religious status is viewed as an exception, a difference, a non religious status is not automatically understood as part of one's his her own citizenship.  Moreover this status does not grant full civil rights .
Denial of civil rights on the basis of religion is most often described as religious persecutions , what can be called  a denial of  rights on the basis of  non belonging to any  religious organisations?  .

We have to deduce that  Israel  is not one of the states, as we know them, heirs  of   enlightenment and French revolution, in which freedom of religion and civil rights   were granted as descending from  a godless entity: the state itself.
Certainly  enlightenment, declaration of universal rights of men, did not prevent Nazi concentration camps and holocaust.
In Israel the  history  of  Jewish identity seems to have  completed one full circle in the dialectic process and is now passing through the last synthetically phase .  Once impose by persecutors, Jewish identity    imposes herself  as master, non recognizing, or recognizing as non entities, the other non religious identities.
Sartre declared that even if the Jew did not exist, the anti-Semite would create him. The anti-Semite creates for himself a Jew that is representative of all that he loathes and hates.  On the other hand the democratic leftist is anti semite  because,  on the virtues of the universal rights of humanity, he   denies  the Jew his identity as a Jew. While the anti-Semite creates the Jew to destroy him, the democrat negates the Jew,  pretending  the problem of anti-Semitism does not exist.
But most of the times,  Jewish identity cannot be escaped because is imposed by  others, the non Jews.
The Jew, Sartre argues, affirms his role in a drama  in which Jewish identity  is imposed on him by the other, the anti-Semite, who acts as the oppressor.
The most dramatic examples were those of assimilated Jews who discovered their own identities trough Nazi and fascism persecutions.
That was the paradox that led to the creation of Israel, here we came to the completion of the full circle.  Universal rights  of men, are not  granted by the mere force of a declaration, they have  to be granted by a state, and the rights of the Jew to be Jew by a Jewish state. But a Jewish state grounded on  the   right of being Jew, affirms paradoxically the religion over the state, and the religious status superimposed over  that of just being a citizen of a state, therefore denying to non Jews and even non religion persons the full  enjoyment  of citizenship rights of that state.
Obviously enough the discrimination, so we may it call it, of non religious couples, results in a  strange privileged situation for gay couples ( privileged only in comparison to countries like Italy which do not have any kind whatsoever recognition of same sex unions)
Same-sex marriage cannot legally be performed in Israel  because only government-recognized religious authorities — all of whom disallow same-sex marriage — may officiate marriages. Foreign marriages, including same-sex marriages, are recognized in Israel. Furthermore, like unmarried opposite-sex couples, same-sex couples in Israel can access nearly all of the rights of marriage in the form of unregistered cohabitation status, akin to common-law marriage. According to a 2009 poll, 56% of Israelis support equal rights for same-sex couples.

Mymosa Moon in Israel. on identities and differences. How to keep your faith and your willy too.

Your own MyMosa Moon was staying for a while in Israel. To tell the truth I was following  a friend of mine, Miranda, who had to undergo a sex change operation, or as it is technically called  Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS). She had discovered that Israel was safer then Morocco, and cheaper than Switzerland.  We rented a flat in fashionable Dizengoff Street, in Tel Aviv, she was away most of the time in a Clinique on the outskirt of town, (tests, therapy, and  so on).  I was happy and  alone and I enjoyed the city bursting with life. In march was so mild that you could already lie on the beach and swim in the Mediterranean sea. Even during the Shabbat, when the rest of the city was shut down, you could have a cappuccino in a Segafredo bar, or a wonderful pasta in one of the many Italian restaurants. Night life was,  probably still is, one of the busiest in the world, in fact you might have already heard the saying, Jerusalem prays, Haifa works, Tel Aviv sins. Now and then buses were exploding,  but I moved around  with taxi. I did my best to ignore the problems, I just admired the soldiers going around fully armed, I submitted stoically to the rough body inspections everywhere. But in Israel reality is meant to catch up with you as much as you try to avoid it.
One night a pleasant chap after having  bought me a drink,  asked me- Are you
Jewish?-
I was crestfallen. It was such an unexpected question. Nobody had asked it me  before, and nobody has asked it  me ever since. I hear that for instance in New York you can ask people about their religion, but in Italy  everyone  assumes that everyone else is more o less a relapsed catholic. So that night I had for the first time the feeling of being a non Jew among many Jews, and what it might mean the contrary, being a Jew among many who aren't, although as  a transsexual I had had some  experience in  being  different.
-No- I said- I am just Italian-
-Why are you here?-
-To  have a change- I answered-
-Of what'-he insisted- of religion?, are you going to convert to Judaism?- I met probably the only one with this fixed idea.
-No -I said-I am here for  a sex change, not of religion- I lied, thinking of Miranda, I never doubted in my life about keeping my willy-
-I think only stupid people  change their own religion  to convert to another,- I went on- In my humble opinion, religions are meant only  to be quitted, not to be joined, sex on the other hand I think that at least once in your life you should change it- and since I had succeeded in making him nervous, very elegantly  I left.

Stiamo a vedere.

Sancta, Santorum, Sanctimony

I never came across “sanctimony” before reading Philip Roth’s The human stain. The word occurs almost at the beginning of the novel, prominently at the end of a long sentence, “the ecstasy of sanctimony”.
“Ninetyeight in new England was a summer of exquisite warmth and sunshine, in baseball a summer of mythical battle between a home-run god who was white and home-run god who was brown, and in America the summer of an enormous piety binge , a purity binge, when terrorism – which had replaced communism as the prevailing threat to the country’s security, was succeeded by cocksucking , and a virile, youthful middle-aged president, and a brash smitten twenty-one- year-old employee carrying on in the Oval Office like two teenage kids in a parking lot revived America’s oldest communal passion, historically perhaps the most treacherous and subversive pleasure: the ecstasy of sanctimony”.  –
We know what they say: translator traitor, the Italian translation, by V. Mantovani of The human stain, La macchia Umana, , (Einaudi, 2001), .dilutes the rhythm of the English sentence,  transforms the vulgar and common “cocksucking” in a neologism “pompinismo”, (that after communism and terrorism, we have to admit it, sounds rather funny), and the high-sounding “sanctimony” in the common “ipocrisia”.
Hypocrisy is obviously not the same thing as sanctimony,  although connected to it, googling it I found : “sanctimonious hypocrisy”
The Oxford English dictionary defines “Sanctimonious” as follows: “Of pretended or assumed sanctity piety,  making a show of sanctity , affecting  the appearance of sanctity”., and quotes Shakespeare’s Measure for measure , (I,ii, 7)
“Thou concluded like the sanctimonious pirate, that went to sea with the ten commandment, but scraped one out of the table.”
In Measure for Measure, Angelo, as the personification of the law, does not accept the validity of the civil marriage of Claudio and Juliet, decides to enforce the rule that fornication is punishable by death, sentences Claudio to be executed. We discover at the end that Angelo does not apply the same strict rule to himself

Nomen Omen: Senator Rick Santorum always equates gay civil marriage with bigamy, polygamy and bestiality. Santorum’s ancestor apparently came from Riva del Garda, near Mymosa Moon’s little villa. Now being the south of Germany as well as the north of Italy, it is one of the most affluent areas in Europe. Had his grandfather been living there now, he wouldn't have migrated to America. Probably one would think that we Italians need indeed a little bit of sanctimony more than Americans, and that the migration of the Santorums has been a great loss for us. But sanctimony is a temptation for every power in every country.  I do not forget  that Mara Garfagna, minister in  Berlusconi’s government , an ex-actress  who did not become minister for her beautiful mind, proposed a law, calling for  more  severe punishments and restrictions of prostitutes, their pimps and their clients. Berlusconi enthusiastically and loudly supported the law. Tons  of laughter have buried it. Italian journalist Guzzanti has even coined a neologism“mignottocrazia”, Whorecracy, for Berlusconi’s regime. The story shows, however,  that once in power, even persons of non-impeccable reputation, make it difficult for others to get where they are by the same means. Sin has to be a privilege, not a common resource available to everybody, and consent and power have to be conquered and exercised always at the expense of someone else.

The Holy of Holies Tiberian Hebrewקֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים Qṓḏeš HaqQŏḏāšîm) is a term in the Hebrew Bible which refers to the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle and later the Temple in Jerusalem where the Ark of the Covenant was kept during the First Temple, which could be entered only by the High Priest on Yom Kippur. *Wikipedia(.

Hand Jobs

Masturbation derives probably from latin  manu stuprare (defile by hand) The Oxford Dictionary
recorded the word in 1766. The Catholic Church might have coined the term, for Penitential Books
developed in the 6Th through 10Th centuries.
There is a great confusion between compound words and etymology, historical development of words and
analysis of their current surface forms, meaning and etymology, (sound change or semantic
change do not authorize the equivalence of them).
There are funny  popular etymologies  such as Elephant and Castle, (an area of London)  from Infanta de
Castilha, (who, it is said, happened to have stopped there) and fuck, supposed acronym of fornication
under consent of king.
In general we are very happy when we hear an etymology, it gives us the satisfaction  of a discovery, the
feeling of digging out the real truth hidden under the surface of  such a common thing as everyday language.
Etymologies  have the aura of  scientific arguments , they can be  instruments of seduction and
manipulation. With plays on words, meaning and/or sound, they are  favourite  tools, of comedians,
writers,  preachers, gurus, and salesmen. Our own famous Oxford professor Nicola Gardini http://www.mymosamoon.com/2012/02/perche-usare-wikipedia-quando-ce-il.html even wrote a
novel on etymologies. Derrida made a beautiful liaison between umbrella and oblivion.
Heidegger's entire philosophy is based on such technique of words and verbs manipulation. It is said the
french philosopher and psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan was a great reader of Saint Isidore of Seville
(560–636) , the author of the  Etymologiae , which is not just a collection of abstruse, odd, false
etymologies, but  a synopsis of all contemporary knowledge, a kind of medieval Wikipedia, in it there is,
quecunque fere sciri debentur, (Braulio) practically everything that it is necessary to know

Isidore (right )and Braulio (left). Ottonian manuscript 10th century. (Wikipedia)
Lacan borrowed from Isidore the famous joke le nom du père le non du père, without quoting him.

Pope John Paul II justly proclaimed Isidore, Saint patron of the Net. Pray for us all on the net, Sain Isidore
and particularly for the authoress of this  blog, your devoted humble and almost saint herself,
Mymosa Moon.
